2.1. FEROKE YOUNGMENS’ LIBRARY : AN OVERVIEW.


Feroke Youngmens’ Library & Reading Room was established in 1952 and affiliated to Kerala State Library Council in 1957 ( Reg. No. 11KKD 2265) and registered in 1992 under Societies Registration Act XX1 of 1860 ( Reg. No. 311/1992) . This is the only approved ‘A’ Grade Library in Feroke Panchayath, which is a rural area. The library situated in the middle of Feroke Grama Panchayath. It is far away from Kozhikode town about 12 Kms. The library administration is controlled by an eleven members committee including four office bearers President, Secretary Etc., elected once in three years by its members under the Kerala State Library Council Election Act.



2.1.1. Library Building

The library if functioning in its own building having two stores. The total plinth area is about 200 sq.m. The ground floor is used as reading room and stack room and the first floor is used for Reference section, Children section, women’s section, Office and Computer room. The Library has another newly constructed two store building. Ground floor constructed under the financial assistance of R.R.R.L.Foundation. First floor constructed under the financial assistance of the rural development fund of the Hon.Ex.M.P. Sri. T.K.Hamza. the total plinth area is about 204.2 sq.m. The ground floor is used as a conference hall to conduct seminars, discussions, Education classes. The first floor used for Nursery School, Dance Classes, Musical classes and Tailoring classes.



2.1.2. Working Hours

It is kept open all working days and also on public holidays except a few important holidays and National holidays. It works in two sessions per day. That is from 9.30 A.M. to 12.30 AM and 3.00 P.M to 7.30 P.M.



2.1.3. The objects of the Library

1. Inculcate the reading habit among the people.

2. Provides facilities for reading News Papers and Periodicals for let them know the current events.

3. Develop the knowledge of people by conducting discussions and seminars on various subjects.

4. Organize activities to develop their social, educational and cultural status.

5. Special attention to create reading habit among children and women.



2.1.4. Members.

The Library has 1252 members, which includes 312 Life members, 300 ordinary members, 473 balavedi members, 165 mobile library members.



2.1.5. Collection of Materials

The Library provides facilities to read almost all leading dailies and periodicals in and outside of Kerala and has to treasure of 16575 valuable books to issue among members this collection includes 32 volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica and 2956 number of other reference books. The library has 340 educational CD’s in their collection.



2.1.6. Funds

The library being a non-profit organization is being maintained wholly from public funds. The funds must be assured to a large extent so that the planned development of the libraries can take place. The fund is raised from the following way.

1. Government grant - Kerala state Library council allowed annual grant to library Rs.20,000/- for purchase of books and Rs.12,000/- for Librarians allowance.

2. Grama Panchayath Grant – Feroke Grama Panchayath allowed 7 news papers and 3 weeklies to the library.

3. Donation from Public – the donation accepted from the public

4. subscription of regular members

5. Sale of old news papers and over due charges – The receipt under the sale of old newspapers and overdue charges is very negligible.



2.1.7. Information materials

There are 16575 numbers of books in the library to cover all branches of knowledge and provide up-to-date in formation in the following subjects. General, Mathematics, Engineering, Technical, Zoology, Geology, agriculture, Medicine, Useful Arts, Poetry, Drama, Novel, Essays, Linguistics, religious, civics, Politics, economics, sociology, History, education, Law and Computer. The books are classified according to DDC classification and arranged accordingly.



2.1.8. Essential services


Lending service, Reference service, Inter library loan service, Mobile Library Services for women’s, selective dissemination of information service, circulation of documents in anticipation to individuals keeping in view their interest, replies to enquiry are the main services of the Feroke Youngmens’ Library.


2.1.9. Other Activities

1. A kinder garden nursery school (LKG &UKG) is also functioning in this library in English medium for the children of local poor people with nominal fee.

2. A good Balavedi (children cultural forum) is attached to this library and about 473 school children are members. Different Cultural activities like music, dance, instrumental music, sports & games etc., are the activities done by them.

3. A Vanitha vedi (Women’s Cultural Wing) about 100 to 150 women active members of local house wives, working women, are the active participants of this wing. Classes and seminars of subject like social health education etc. are conduction for them 4 to 5 times a year. Tailoring classes, jewelry making classes, self employment training classes are conducted by under this wing.

4. Classical music, classical dance, instrumental music – Regular classes for classical music’s, classical dance, instrumental music are arranged by the library.

5. Rural Information centre.- this centre have six computers to study basic classes for students and internet facilities for local people and students to get information for job seekers etc.,

6. career development & Employment guidance classes .- Library is conducting classes for career development for employment seekers to built up their ability and knowledge and prepare them to complete for employment tests and interview. And also conducting regular classes for PSC coaching.

7. Celebration of Library Annual day – Library celebrating annually library day, which covers Dance programmers, cultural programmes, Literature competitions, sports for students, balavedi, nursery, vanitha vedi and publics. The prizes are distributed by the Library Annual day organizing committee.

8. Library conducting different type cultural activities like as seminars, speeches, public talks in every month.

9. Reading weak. - Library conducting reading week on 19th to 25th every year in the month of June. Conducting book reviews, speeches, reading competition in this weak.

his are the main activities done by library and is working for development of Social and educational improvement of the local people right from the beginning.
